THE AOSTA VALLEY

THE RESORTS
THE AOSTA VALLEY is in the most northern part of Italy. It is surrounded by France, Switzerland and Austria and has some of the HIGHEST MOUNTAINS in Europe. This beautiful and vast valley is a WINE GROWING AREA and is predominantly a farming area keeping its herds of cows in sheds during the winter months and out on the mountain areas during the spring, summer and autumn months.
Grapes vines cover the lowlands of the mountains and are harvested and tended by hand usually being harvested in early October when local friends and family groups get together to harvest by hand and celebrate with a party afterwards.
In fact during the summer period there are parties all over the valley for whatever is being harvested or made. Apples, potatoes, polenta, you name it, there is a party for it.
SUMMER TEMPERATURE - can be anything from 20 to 40 degrees but if you dont like the heat then you need not worry, you can just go higher up the the mountain in the day where it is cooler.
DURING THE SUMMER there are an abundance of OUTDOOR SPORTS. Pila in fact has the BIGGEST DOWNHILL MOUNTAINBIKE AREA in Europe. There are also tracks throughout the mountains for biking and of course there is also cycling on the roads. For those interested in watersports there's whitewater rafting, canoeing and canyoning. Several golf courses are throughout the valley with outdoor swimming pools, horseriding and many many other activities.
There are many CASTLES throughout the valley which is steeped in history and the scenery is breathtaking if you like walking especially to many of the REFUGES throughout the mountains.
WE HAVE AN IN-HOUSE BROCHURE WHICH WILL HELP YOU CHOOSE THINGS TO DO TO MAKE YOUR HOLIDAY VERY MEMOREABLE. WE ALSO HAVE A SELECTION OF MAPS FOR AVID WALKERS AND A RECOMMMENDED RESTAURANT LIST.
DURING THE WINTER the area becomes a winter wonderland with downhill skiing, ski racing, cross country skiing and husky sledding.
There are several large DOWNHILL SKI RESORTS in the valley and also many cross country ski tracks up and down the valley.
The main downhill resorts are Pila (7 minutes from the apartments with FREE PARKING) WITH IT'S NEW HIGH SPEED FUNIVIA GOING FROM THE BASE OF THE VALLEY TO THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN, enabling cyclists, pushchairs and walkers to take in the amazing views. COURMAYEUR and LA THUILE are 25-40 minutes away and CERVINIA is 40 minutes. CHAMPOLUC and GRESSONEY are at the other end of the valley for a days outing with a good hours drive.
PILA has an excellent graduation of pistes from beginners to experienced with plenty of off piste for those that want some adventure. Some of the smaller resorts are very inviting and although not open all season they make a pleasant change from the busier larger resorts especially during public holidays. In particular there is CREVACOL 20 minutes drive, COGNE 30 minutes away and TORGNON 40-50 minutes both of which could be coupled with cross country skiing if there are both types of skiers in your party.
Throughout the valley there are CROSS COUNTRY SKI TRACKS all within 30 minutes drive of the chalet and apartments. To name a few are Torgnon and Cogne mentioned above, Courmayeur, St. Barthélemy, Valsavaranche, Valgrisenche and Saint Nicolas.
The ST. ORSO WOOD FAIR is the last weekend of January and could be coupled with a ski week if you are interested
FROM CALAIS it is just 9 hours drive, motorway all the way. Come through the Mont Blanc tunnel and you arrive in the Aosta Valley, Italy.
